What Electives are Offered at Providence?
A better question may be, “What electives are not offered?!” In traditional middle and high school electives are chosen from a set selection of classes that supplement a core curriculum. Our elective courses are more than just add-ons. They are integral to our holistic educational model.
Our typical work week includes life skills, computer skills, internships, exercise, health and wellness, woodworking, graphic design, art, and technology. These subjects are not taught in isolation but are interwoven with other disciplines:
- History and English: A history project might involve graphic design and a written report, enhancing skills in research, writing, and critical analysis.
- Science and Technology: Technology lessons may involve building models or conducting experiments that apply scientific principles.
- Math and Problem-Solving: Woodworking projects incorporate measurements and calculations, teaching practical applications of mathematical concepts.
- And of course Bible – everything is taught with a Christian worldview.
As we integrate electives into the broader curriculum, students experience an interconnected education. From art and music to coding and environmental science, we encourage curiosity and interdisciplinary learning.
The benefits go far beyond the schoolroom – internships and community service are woven into our elective programs. Students step out of the classroom, equipped with tools to interact in real-world settings, applying their knowledge and making a positive impact. Being active in a local faith congregation also nurtures values, empathy, and a sense of community responsibility.
This approach fosters leadership skills and career readiness. Whether it’s participating in student-driven initiatives, joining a robotics club, or learning entrepreneurship, students gain practical skills that go way beyond the classroom. Early on our students learn that leadership isn’t just about titles; it’s about character, empathy, and the ability to inspire others.
We also challenge our students to spend 1000 hours outside per year. Studies show that spending time outdoors positively impacts mental health, relational skills, physical well-being, and even spiritual growth. In addition to the outdoor play one expects from a school, nature becomes our classroom. From our outdoor shop area to our amazing food forest, from our covered learning space to the beautiful play area, we are outdoors as much as possible.
As our students explore, create, and connect, they’re not just accumulating credits; they’re building a foundation for life. So, when we say they’re “ready for leadership roles,” we mean it. They’re poised to succeed—not only in their careers but also as compassionate, curious, and resilient adults.
Middle and high school are a time of exploration, self-discovery, and preparation for the future. Our students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects. At Providence, electives aren’t just courses; they’re pathways to purposeful living.
