What is Dual Enrollment?
At Providence, we are very focused on helping each student become the adult that they need to be. That includes making sure they master all the skills they’ll need for higher education. That’s one of the reasons why we call our high school “Master Academy“.
Master Academy students are encouraged to sign up for dual enrollment, which means they take classes at a college that afford them high school and college credit – at the same time. Students are still enrolled at Providence, but they are also enrolled in a college. Often this is our local Alamance Community College, but it could be Elon University or even an online institution. Each course counts for credit in both places, a highly efficient use of time.
The goal is to graduate from the Master Academy with a high school diploma as well as a head start on college credit. It’s very possible to actually get a high school diploma and an associate degree at the very same time.
When one of our 9th – 12th grade students is dually enrolled, they have the benefit of having Dr. Julie Giles, our Master Academy Director, supervise their work and their learning. She meets with them weekly to ensure they are on track, offer help with proofreading, formatting, and work completion as well as encouragement for the journey. She’s there to answer questions and help the students understand how to approach instructors, learn to build relationships with peers and professors, and stand up for themselves. They learn how to navigate the college systems necessary for success, glean information, and clarify what steps to take in order to be successful. They are guided in selecting the most beneficial classes. All of the above is done with the fact that we are a Christian Montessori Community in the forefront.
“Mrs. Julie” is there to fill in any gaps that she may find. Is the student studying efficiently? Do they need help with time management? Could their writing improve? Are they having social issues? Are they missing deadlines or need a brush up lesson on grammar? If there are difficulties, the student has help in navigating to the best solution. Each student has an individualized experience – and that helps them to be successful.
Dual enrollment provides early exposure to college-level coursework. College is tough, and having a mentor and coach is helpful for success. Most students in America proceed through college without the benefit of this one on one, personalized assistance makes the Master Academy unique among public, charter, and private schools.
